The photographer Stephen Shore has two little dogs that he walks every day, lead in one hand, camera in the other. The thing with dogs, he says, is that, as you walk them, you’re often looking down. “So I’m multitasking: walking my dogs and making art at the same time.”

Shore’s daily perambulations produce a ground-level view of the familiar and banal. Among the most arresting photographs on display in his forthcoming exhibition – the aptly named Details, at Somerset House, as Photo London’s 2019 Master of Photography – are a series of studies of the detritus that he came across while walking. In one, we see the root of a tree, broken asphalt, cigarette butts, a drinking straw and a single bright…
